Do you remember that one time when I posted about how I joined an MLM?
It’s been about six months since that post and boy have things gone crazy. If you want to check it out and see what I do and don’t recommend when running a direct sales business click here. I was not expecting the growth that I experienced. I figured I could try out some of my marketing experience and strategies and see how it went.
Six months later and…
- I’m the #2 sponsor in the entire company (out of almost 200,000 people).
- Make double what I made at my full-time job before becoming a stay-at-home mom.
- I’ve earned so much that my husband has quit his job because it’s completely replaced his income. Insane right?
I’ve also earned,
- Their company car which we are car shopping for this week. (P.S. comment below what your favorite car is, I have no idea what to get!)
- And in January we’re going on an all expenses paid trip to Costa Rica.
How is this my life? Seriously guys, I so did not expect this, and every day in my prayers I thank God for putting this opportunity in my path.
Now, this wouldn’t be a post from Moms Make Cents if I didn’t leave you with some helpful information right? I want to give you some pointers so that if you’re in direct sales or want to be you can apply the strategies too!
First, I’ll give you some tips that apply to anyone in direct sales and then we will dig in specifically for those of you that have a blog or want to use a blog to make money with a direct sales company.

1. Create Your Own Content
If you are involved in a direct sales company, chances are you are in a lot of groups for other reps. Maybe it is your downline, your upline, or just some team pages that have been set up. One observation I’ve made is that in each company there seems to be a notorious graphics group that all distributors pull their content from.
This can be a great resource when you are just starting out, it eases the burden of having to create everything from scratch. But when you exclusively use graphics from these types of groups,
- It is something that your audience has probably already seen before since most likely they are in another group that sells the same product.
- It is not consistent with your own branding, graphics, etc.
I encourage you to take a few extra minutes and create something original. The graphics groups are phenomenal for inspiration, but I would leave it at that.

2. Be Creative
I cannot reinforce this one enough and I seriously feel that this is the #1 reason I have been successful in this experience.
Don’t do what everyone else is doing. If you do that you will blend in, which is the exact opposite of what you want in a direct sales business. You need to be trying new things. Some will undoubtedly fail (that’s business), but others you will knock it out of the park. If I hadn’t been brave and tried new things there is no way I would be where I am at today.
If you are mimicking your upline or another person in your company it will only take you so far because it isn’t authentic to you. People will buy from you because they know YOU and like YOU!
Take five minutes a day to brainstorm something different. Here a couple of tips,
- Look at people in other direct sales companies and see what they are doing then tweak their strategy. Oftentimes, something will be trendy in one direct sales company but hasn’t crossed over to yours yet. Be the trendsetter and incorporate that new idea into your business.
- Look at what other small businesses are doing. What kind of specials are they running, how are they growing their audiences, how often are they posting on social media, etc.
By being aware and applying new strategies you will stand out.
One phenomenal book that talks all about this concept is called Purple Cow by Seth Godin. I highly recommend it!
3. Treat Your Business like a business
If the product you are selling was your own product, something you’d spend years thinking about, creating and developing, how would you market it?
Would you cold message your friends of friends on Facebook asking them to try it? … No!
You would create a marketing plan with strategies for how to grow your social media presence, create a beautiful and functional website and probably look into some paid advertising.
When you only operate via a Facebook group or page it limits what you are able to do with your business.
IF YOU HAVE A BLOG
1. Don’t spam your audience
They signed up to follow you because of your existing content and if they are suddenly flooded with posts about your new company, joining your team, etc. Their red flags are going to start going off and they will jump ship. Not what you were wanting, right?
It is totally okay to have a big “announcement” type blog post, social media post, etc. when you first sign up, but after that, you should incorporate your new company in more subtly.
- Maybe it is a roundup of the top 10 protein shakes for moms and you link your company’s protein powder.
- Or maybe you are a travel blogger and you just went to a business conference for your direct sales company. Write an awesome post about the city you visited and in the post, you can mention it was for your business and then link up to either your “announcement post,” a post about becoming a distributor, or your order form.
There are so many different ways that you can still be giving value to your readers without overwhelming them and being spammy.
You want it to be just enough that they remember that you are with that company (just in case they decide to order or sign up), but not so much that it will bother them and they will unfollow you.
2. Create a marketing strategy for your direct sales product
If you’ve been blogging for a little while you’ve probably participated in an affiliate launch, sponsored campaign, or sold your own products. Treat your direct sales product the same way.
Consider your previous experiences and what had the best results. Which strategies got you the most affiliate sales or sold you the most products from your shop? Then initiate those into your direct sales business!
Did you boost a post on Facebook, send an email out to your newsletter, or collaborate with another blogger?
Since you have done marketing and run a business before, analyze what is going to be the most effective use of your time and resources.
