If you are looking for an opportunity to teach English online as a source for extra income, there aredifferent companies and opportunities that you can choose from.
In this QKids review we will talk specifically about the English teaching company Qkids.
What is QKids?
QKids is an E-learning company founded in 2015 that was created especially for Chinese students
ages 5-12. They hire work at home teachers from U.S and Canada and connects them to the Chinese kids via a virtual classroom.
The lessons are already pre-planned, meaning you don’t need to come up with your own. Everything is provided for including drawing tools, animations, games, video chat, etc.
QKids classes have around one to four students per class. They also require you to have a minimum of 12 classes per week, which is around 6 hours a week minimum.
The maximum amount of hours you can teach is 19 hours or 38 classes.
When it comes to performance reviews, parents of the kids go directly to QKids for their feedback, so you will only be dealing with the students.
Applying for QKids
To apply with QKids click here and it will take you to the application page.
You need a college degree or proof that you are currently studying in a university for any degree.
You also need to be a Native English speaker.
Here is a video explaining the Qkids application process:
When it comes to technical requirements, a fast and secure Internet connection is important, like any other online job. This will ensure that you can perform your work in the best possible way.
- You need an upload speed of at least 2 Mbps and a download speed of 10Mbps.
- Qkids supports Windows 7 or above or Mac 10.9 and above.
- You cannot use an iPad or cellphone to teach.
- Other important devices you should have are a webcam and a headset with microphone.
You will be trained with the software that you will be using to teach the kids. Even if your students are Chinese, you do not need to know the language.
You also don’t need to have past teaching experience, also it is preferred.
Another important thing is that you should also be willing to learn. The most essential thing is that you are proficient with the English language. It is also best if you have good Internet service. If you are engaging with the kids and love to interact with them, this job may also be a good fit for you.
Once QKids contacts you, you will go through the following steps:
Qkids will have you to download the WeChat app so that you can communicate and interact with the trainers and the people involved in the hiring process.
They will ask for information like your contact information, resume, available hours, and screenshot of computer specs.
You will then submit that short video where you are talking about yourself, work experiences, working experiences with kids, as well as reading a short book.
Demos and Training
You will then be required to do a 30-minute pre-demo where you will be operating the software, managing sound, and video quality, playing games, and mastering other technical aspects of the software.
They will also ask you some questions about why you want to work for QKids.
You will then have a 1 hour paid demo in which they will pay you $16. Before this demo, you will receive training videos and materials that you will use to brush up on your teaching skills or learn about the good practices when it comes to teaching.
You will have the demo in the virtual classroom and the interviewer will also act as your student. Throughout the demo, the interviewer will also give you some advice. This could take around 25 minutes. This training is vital for your first real trial class.
Trial classes are actual classes with real students that you are teaching. You will have around two to five trial classes, which are also paid. After each class, you will receive feedback with suggestions to improve for the next upcoming class.
Normally, there are 10 slides per class, where you can also play some games, use flash cards, or have an animation that the students will follow and repeat after.
At the end of the class, there is a short review quiz that the kids will take as well as “fun time”.
After your last trial class, your trainer will then review your performance and give you feedback. Based on this evaluation, they will decide to either hire you, give you more trial classes, or not accept you.
Take note that after they have accepted you, they will book your first two weeks based on half of your availability. After this time period, you will be given more and more classes.
A half hour lesson (30 minutes) will pay you US$8 which is equal to $16 an hour.
With bonuses and incentives, you can get up to $20 per hour or $10 per class.
The bonuses are attendance bonuses and performance bonuses.
Each time you show up to your class, you get a $1 bonus. If a family gives you a rating of at least 4 out of 5, you can get a $1 performance bonus.
If you show up to your classes and get good ratings for your teaching performance, you can earn $20 per hour.
If you go to the maximum and teach all 38 classes in a week, you can earn $380 in a week or $1,520 in a month.
If you improve your ranking, you can also get paid more. You will get paid each month through a bank transfer to your account, usually around the 12th.
The transfer fees will be taken cared of by QKids. Take note that you will be like an independent contractor so you will take care of your own taxes and other benefits.
Your teaching times are on Beijing time, meaning it will be either early mornings or late at nights. Each class would last for around 30 minutes each.
There is a minimum of 6 hours a week you should be able to complete or 12 classes, with a maximum of 19 hours a week (38 classes) that you are allowed to work.
The classes are usually spaced 10 minutes apart from each other.
You could choose from the following time slots:
Every Morning (Morning Classes):
6:40-7:10 am, EST
7:20-7:50 am, EST
8:00-8:30 am, EST
8:40-9:10 am, EST
Additional for Saturday and Sunday (Night Classes):
8:40-9:10 pm, EST
9:20-9:50 pm, EST
10:00-10:30 pm, EST
10:40-11:10 pm, EST
11:20-11:50 pm, EST
Depending on the time of the year, it could be busier like during the holidays, school vacations, etc. Qkids will also keep your schedule full as long as you are receiving high ratings.
You can take time off but you should inform QKids ahead of time. This is important so that you won’t lose your attendance bonus.
Before starting your class, you need to log in 5 minutes beforehand. Around this time, you should already be talking to the kids. If you are not able to log in 5 minutes before, a standby teacher could take over your class.
Qkids Standby Teachers
Qkids standby teachers do exactly that. They wait and standby to teach a class if, for some reason, the original teacher is not able to do so. They would also need to be logged in 5 minutes before the scheduled class.
As a standby teacher you will be informed if you are required to teach for that class if not, you can log out after 3 minutes.
If you don’t actually teach, you would receive $4 (which is basically a half pay). If you are required to teach, you will receive your usual rate for your classes. Anyone can be assigned as a standby teacher, so it will also depend on your availability and schedule.
Your schedules for the week will be posted on the QKids site on Sunday morning. If you need to change availability, you would need to do this on or before the Wednesday prior.
QKids will when possible also match the teachers to the same students for different lessons so that there is consistency in the instruction.
Pros of QKids
Consistent work schedule
You will always have a class scheduled for you by QKids, so you won’t need to compete with other tutors or worry about booking students. This translates to a steady flow of extra income.
You get given lessons to teach your students so you don’t have to do any preparation work yourself. There are also different tools, visuals, games, and other forms of media to help you with teaching.
Flexible time schedule
You can choose what time schedule that you are available for teaching, so in this way, you can adjust it to your own schedules.
QKids are also very considerate when it comes to taking time off, attending to emergencies, or if you are having some technical issues. The important is that you inform them ahead, especially if it is a planned break that you are requesting.
Fun and Interactive
The lessons aren’t just plain old boring lessons since you will also be having games, trivia, flash cards, animation, and other fun and interactive activities that are educational yet entertaining at the same time.
With the potential of earning $16 – $20 an hour, QKids is a great way for you to earn income online from your home. You are also not required to spend for any teaching materials or tools.
Cons of QKids
Limited to U.S and Canadian citizens only
You need to be a resident of the U.S. or Canada to be able to teach. So even if you speak English but live in another country, you are not able to use this teaching platform.
With the time difference, the working hours won’t be in sync with U.S or Canadian time, so if you aren’t a morning person, it wouldn’t be ideal for you or it might take some getting used to.
A plus side to this teaching schedule is that if you do have a full-time job, it can fit as a sideline job for extra income.
Competitive hiring process
Because your lessons will always be provided, this makes the hiring process perhaps more competitive and extensive compared to other e-learning platforms.
Limited maximum hours of work
Since you are only limited to 19 hours of work in a week, your potential of earning higher is hindered by this rule and so you can’t rely solely on this income.
QKids vs VIPKID
VIPKID is a similar e-learning platform to QKids. With VIPKID, you have to book your own classes so there could be times when you can’t get a class, meaning you won’t be earning anything.
QKids books your classes for you so you are always assured you can teach, you would just need to follow your schedule.
Consistent classes are an advantage that QKids have over VIPKID.
You can read our full VIPKID review here.
Kids per class
VIPKID has a one on one kind of system wherein you would be teaching one student at a time. QKids has a maximum of 6 students per class that you will be teaching.
QKids is a legit ESL online teaching company that is getting popular and growing as time goes by. It’s not only educational, but it can also be a fun time for both teachers and students.
Conclusion QKids Review
This is why a lot of students, as well as teachers, want to join this community and if you are interested in teaching English online, you can take this opportunity and get the extra income while helping kids learn.
